Company History - South Georgia ProduceA few words about South Georgia Produce and our Family. At an early age David Corbett began working the family farm with his father, the late Dan Corbett. After high school and throughout his college years he always dreamt of pursuing a career in farming. After graduating from college in 1970 David moved home and married Violet. David had a full time profession outside of farming but farmed part time seasonally. After a few years, David's love of farming consumed him and he began farming full time. For the majority of David's life he had grown row crops and tobacco and decided to try his hand at vegetable farming on plastic. Quickly thereafter vegetables proved to be a success and David continually increased his acreage. Violet, who had worked as a Registered X-Ray Technologist for several years, decided to work part time at the hospital to enable her to help with the vegetable operation. After transporting the vegetables to various buyers for several years David and Violet decided to establish a produce company. Together they envisioned a place available to friends and neighbors that would enable growers to deliver fresh vegetables and convenient distribution to buyers. South Georgia Produce, Inc. (SGPI) was established in the spring of 1993. The first two years they rented space at the State Farmers Market in Valdosta. Shortly thereafter, cooling space became an issue and David and Violet decided to build a new facility on their farm in Lake Park approximately 6 miles east of I-75. The Lake Park location proved to be convenient for truckers near the interstate. Today David and Violet's children are actively involved in the family business. Their son, Brian is involved with produce sales. Their youngest daughter, Brandi recently completed her degree in Marketing has rejoined her mother in the office at SGPI. Their son-in-law, Jason, completed a degree in Agribusiness and is the farm manger for David Corbett Farms. Read more about our quality standards in certifications and affiliations. David &
